Sandbank trio rushed to hospital

Posted in: Personal Injury Public Place Accidents

Three men had to be taken to hospital after they became trapped on a sandbank in Sussex on Monday.  The trio had walked out to the nearby sandbank, but as the incoming tide became increasingly overwhelming, they required urgent help.  Unable to swim back against the strong currents, lifeguards assisted the three men who were immediately taken to hospital.

Two men had to be revived

Believed to have walked out to the sandbank at low tide with a bigger group of people, the men did not realise how dangerous the water could become at high tide. Two of the men had to be revived and were taken to the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth by helicopter. The third man was taken to the St Richard’s hospital in Chichester by ambulance.

Matt West, from the Solent Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, warned others: “If you are heading out for a swim, check the sea conditions and remember that even though the sea may look calm on the surface, there is the danger of strong currents underneath.”

Mr. West encourages people to check tide times before swimming in the sea to prevent similar scenarios.  If someone is spotted at sea that appears to be in danger, you should phone 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
